Fan coil assembly and three wiring methods

How a fan coil is built step by step and the three wiring layouts, plus installation checks and a cleaning routine for the coil and filters.

1. Fit the coil

Place the coil tray on the line and check the coil for damage. Fix the coil to the tray, watching for bent fins, over-wet fins or a white-grey deposit on the surface.

2. Fit the top cover and fan-mount insulation

The top-cover insulation is black sponge, with good thermal and acoustic effect; stick it flat with no folds, gaps or skew. Then apply sponge board to the fan-mount plate.

3. Fit the motor

First check the motor for broken leads or contact problems; once passed, mount it.

4. Fit the fan

Check the impeller for dents or deformation; once passed, mount the fan with the motor, taking care not to fit the wheel backwards.

5. Fit fan and motor

Check that the impeller shaft and motor shaft match, then fix the wheel to the motor.

6. Fit the drain pan and top cover

Place the coil into the drain pan, connect and fix, then fit the top cover.

Three wiring methods for the fan coil

Drawback: the water circuit must stay energised to stay open, which shortens the actuator life. Advantage: low price. Emergency: when the actuator burns out, the two-way valve normally closes automatically; use the small lever on the actuator to force it open and keep cooling or heating.

Wiring without a motorised two-way valve: the red wire (220V live, L) goes to the thermostat live terminal; the blue wire (neutral, N) is in series with the coil and thermostat; green, brown and yellow go to the thermostat high, medium and low speed terminals; the control cable is 5-core 1.0 mm² to standard. This only changes fan speed; it cannot switch the chilled water on or off.

Before installation, inspect the unit, run the three speeds and do a hydrostatic test. Use flexible hose where the pipe meets the coil. Place the supply/return valves and filter near the coil, above the drain pan. When suspended, fix it firmly and level, with a 0.003 slope toward the drain outlet and double nuts at the rod. Concealed coils need an access panel. Connect to the pipes with a dedicated tool after flushing the system, using a 200 mm plastic hose with a clamp at the coil and drain connection. Clean the strainer after commissioning.

Cleaning steps

Remove the return grille and dust filter and wash the filter with high-pressure water. Remove the drum and impeller. Check the motor and capacitor for burnt marks; if sound, brush-clean the impeller and drum. Apply HSRS-01 fin cleaner, wait 5–10 minutes, then rinse. When the fins are clean (two to three copper tubes visible), refit the motor and wheel. Clean the condensate pan and add three biocide tablets. Refit the filter and grille. Remove and clean the small Y-strainer.
